In 1914, a new Christian organization called Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC), or Church of Christ, was established in the Philippines. It was formally registered on July 27 of that year by Brother Felix Y. Manalo. From the beginning, INC committed to teaching only what is written in the Bible, promoting structured worship, and instilling spiritual discipline among its members. The first congregation was set up in Punta, Sta. Ana, Manila served as the starting point for INC’s rapid growth across the capital and eventually throughout Luzon. Soon, the Church’s presence extended to the Visayas and Mindanao, allowing it to reach a wide range of communities. By the time Brother Felix passed away on April 12, 1963, ecclesiastical districts had been established in most of the provinces of the Philippines.
International Growth and Leadership
Brother Eraño G. Manalo succeeded his father as Executive Minister after Brother Felix’s death. Under his leadership, INC began expanding beyond the Philippines. In 1968, the Church opened its first international congregations in Honolulu, Hawaii, and San Francisco, California. This marked the start of INC’s worldwide mission. The 1970s saw further growth, with congregations established in North America, including New York, parts of Canada, and Guam. Europe became part of the Church’s reach by establishing a congregation in London in 1972. Australia saw INC’s arrival in the mid-1970s. In Asia, congregations were formed in Hong Kong in 1974, Thailand in 1976, and Japan in 1977. Africa welcomed INC congregations in Nigeria and South Africa in 1978.
During the 1980s, the Church continued expanding into Scandinavian countries and nearby areas. In the 1990s, INC reached Latin America by organizing congregations in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and cities like Rome, Jerusalem, and Athens. In the early 2000s, INC established worship groups in South America, including Brazil and Peru. By Brother Eraño’s death in 2009, INC had grown to more than half of the world’s regions. Today, the Church has members from 152 racial and ethnic groups, with congregations in 168 countries and territories across six continents.
Key Teachings and Faith
Iglesia Ni Cristo teaches that the one true God is the Father, rejecting the Trinity doctrine. Jesus Christ is regarded as the Son of God and the Savior. The Bible is considered the sole authority in faith and religious practices. INC doctrine states that salvation requires baptism and membership in the Church. The importance of unity under Church administration is emphasized, with members taught that it is necessary to remain part of the true Church as mentioned in the Bible.
